How take-home pay is calculated in Nigeria
- From January 2026 the Nigeria Tax Act applies: the first ₦800,000 a year is tax-free, then 15%, 18%, 21%, 23% and 25% above ₦50 million.
- Employee pension (8%) and NHF (2.5%) contributions are deducted before tax, plus rent relief of 20% of annual rent up to ₦500,000.
- Up to 2025, a consolidated relief allowance (₦200,000 or 1% of income, plus 20%) applied, with rates from 7% to 24%.
Pension is applied to total salary for simplicity; in practice it is 8% of basic, housing and transport allowances. Figures are estimates, not tax advice.
